cant advise on costs of the domain as i didnt buy it but i made my own family site for photos etc, the server where the site has hosted has a cpanel which has something called fantastico,
fantastico is brilliant, you can install all kinds of different scripts with literally just a click of a button, i use the 4Images Gallery script for the pictures which is really easy to customise! and fantastico lets you add even more like content management systems/blogs/forums/mailing listsYes Your Dukeiness

I have two websites on the go ... I use Freewebs for both of them. (sorry, couldn't get that to link, and now its stuck in an underline I can't get off!!) ... the address just has the usual www at the front and .com at the back!
My main family one I pay a small amount per year -- can't remember exactly but I think it's about £18 ish, to remove adverts, give me more space and allow me to upload faster.
I've also put one together for an online game we play, World of Warcraft, which is completely free (unfortunately, as its hosted by the freewebs company, for some reason I can't link it directly - its the freewebs address as above, with /wowdarkwolves at the end!!!
The first one is completely put together on my PC and uploaded, using my own software and templates, etc. The second one is done completely online using their templates and requires no knowledge of HTML. The banner and the photos are obviously uploaded from my or other machines, but these are very easy to do using a browse button.
On the second one is also a free forum by www.freeforums.org - this again is completely free and everything you see there, including the forum, layout and template is simply a matter of picking things from lists/clicking buttons.
The adverts shown on the games site are made "relevant" to your website ... so if your website was mainly about family, you'd probably get adverts about family tree software, etc.
For my domain name - I have that with 1and1, who I've been with for several years now and not had any problems. Note that their prices are just about to go up though ... a .co.uk domain is about to go from £1.99 per annum to £2.99 per annum, and I think they've increased the .net addresses by about 10 or 20p. But this is the first price rise I've even encountered with them.
HTH.
Edit ... sorry about the round-about way of directing you to the various sites ... MSE forums don't appear to like freewebs and every time I put in a link to them, it converted it to !!!!!!!!!0 -

The current Mrs Counter blogs on ebay, myspace etc, although I haven't really taken much interest in them.
Come to think of it, it could well be the case that she will doing most of the website work as well once it is up and running.Today is the first day of the rest of your life0 -
