Name removal Joint Account?

Hi everyone,

I am just wondering if anyone has had the luck of getting their name removed from a joint account without the means of both parties agreeing to it? I am at that point of frustration now.. I still have a joint Lloyds account with ex partner, this is NOT MY account. My name was added when we were living together, however, I have not been with him for over a year now and have no way of getting in touch with him which is seriously starting to boil my p***. I have tried phoning - just pings as if it has been cut off, I have messaged his friends - they say they haven't heard from him and don't know where he is etc. I don't even have a card for the account, I don't want to see anything to do with it, his money is non of my business, but Lloyds won't remove my name from it, is there a way I can take this further? All I want is my name off! Surely they will be able to see that I don't use it?

If Lloyds won't allow you to remove the name and the other party won't consent then you can't remove it unfortunately.

However what you can do is advise them of a dispute between the parties, which will (should) lead them to immediately freeze the account until you both come to an agreement as to how the account is to be operated going forward (or not, i.e. closed). You may discover that that suddenly makes your ex spring into action when all his bills start bouncing and/or he can't get at the money in the account. You should be able to do this over the phone.

Indeed - OP was repeatedly advised to do this in last week's thread about this:

    I thought it seemed familiar!

OP why start a new thread to ask the same question as you did last week?

@OP as above - I'd take heed of the comments/suggestions on your previous thread.

I'd highly recommend getting in touch with Lloyds and inform them that the account is in dispute. This should freeze it until this whole issue can be sorted. I'd also strongly recommend that you get access to the account (ie. get issued a debit card and online banking credentials) so you can assess the state of play here - since it is a joint account, you are jointly liable for the full amount any debt that may be accrued regardless of who accused it (they can pursue either party for 100% of the full amount, not just your "half" of the account). A possible thought could be that the account is overdrawn, and that could be why Lloyds is refusing to remove your name from the account without agreement from your ex-partner.
