Broken SMEG machine

Hi all,

I purchased a newbuild flat in November 2016 and it came with a brand new Smeg washer dryer, 3 months later I ended up moving to abroad for work and let my flat out, unfurnished. All of my furniture was stored in my parents' house for 2 years while i was away.

I have now just moved back into my flat and my machine is showing an error code of E11 and it turns out the computer is broken and will need replacing at £220!!

Obviously I am out of warranty, just fairly annoyed that the machine hasn't really had a lot of use out of it at all and for a £750 machine I'd expect more. I've emailed SMEG to ask if they can assist - but still awaiting their response.

Do i have a leg to stand on at all with the sale of goods act?

SOGA replaced by Consumer Rights see sticky top of page .
You have no rights against Smeg your consumer rights are against the vendor .Wait and see what Smeg say before going down the vendor route .

I don't think normal consumer rights apply if the "vendor" is the housebuilder (in the same way that they don't apply in relation to the flat itself). Sure it's come up here before if anybody fancies a search.

There’s a possibility that the machine being moved about when put into storage and then brought back and reinstalled could have caused or contributed to the computer fault, that’s assuming that you hadnt fitted the transit bolts for the move

You need to contact the house builder, your contract is with them.

Smeg don't even need to speak to you as they would only have to deal with the original purchaser if it was bought directly from them, probably not so they have no need to talk to anyone.

How and where was it stored while you were away? If it's an advanced machine with more digital features than a bog standard washer which it must be to have a "computer" built in then it will be more susceptible to damage from incorrect storage.
  • Does "All of my furniture was stored..." include the washing machine?

The machine ( along with all my other furniture) was stored in the spare room of my mums house. So there won't be an issue of the cold or damp getting to it.

It's a more advanced machine, which is why I'm hoping that SMEG will assist in this. The brushes have been replaced and it worked temporarily, but the error code is still showing - with labour costs it's a total repair of £300 now.

I've contacted redrow and SMEG, redrow wanted nothing to do with it, SMEG have asked for the repair report which I've sent to them.

The move was a 20 minute drive, so it didn't really have far to travel, I'd hope that this isn't the cause !!

Regardless of the length of drive, did you put the transit bolts back in?

How it was handled during the move will be relevant. Was it kept upright or was it tilted or laid flat etc.

It is odd that brushes would need replacing after 3 months use
Does the repairer know what they are doing ?
