Hello Everyone
While opening a new savings account, the lady at my branch asked me to write down my pin and a password on a slip of paper.
I told her that I understood the media advised people that this was supposed to be private and that it would never be asked for in full. I am shocked, is this normal please?
Regards

Your post doesn't explain why the lady asked you to record these details.the lady at my branch asked me to write down my pin and a password on a slip of paper.
The context (opening an account) you describe suggests that the lady only asked you to write these details on paper for your own benefit when you left the branch, not because either the lady or other branch staff wanted to see them.0 -

Still terrible advice and goes against everything the banks tell you to do.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

It will be the PIN to log onto online banking i assume.Hello Everyone

I hope your not planning on keeping much money in a Natwest savings accounts because you can get far better interest from other accounts!0 -
Why open a Natwest savings account in the first instance? Their rates are dreadful.0

Pin and password for WHAT? Debit cards, assuming the savings account comes with a debit card, don't have passwords and the PIN would be sent through the post.
Surely the lady in the bank didn't set up online banking for you there and then did she? Normally you would set it up yourself at home.
Regardless of that, I assume you were told to write it down because the lady was concerned that you would not remember it if you didn't write it down if she just told you it the once in branch.
If I have misunderstood and in fact the staff member aske you to provide her with your internet banking PIN and password, then this is wrong. She has no cause to ask for this information and she should be reported.0 -

Advised you to write it down and keep it to yourself so you don't forget it?
Or told you to write it down and give it to her?
Big difference! If the latter - what was the context?0 -
Was it anything like this conversation?

As others have said PIN for what and password for what? And written down for what? You? Or someone else? If for you it's nothing to be shocked about.
If you already have an account with NatWest you should know these already, but you wouldn't need to be in branch to open a savings account if you already bank with them? If you don't bank with them why open a savings account with them? I'm sure you have your reasons but it's an odd story!
As for the 'media' advising people not to write these down I think you'll find it's the banks advising people not to - the media are just telling you what the banks advise.0
