In short, Control Account PLC are writing to me demanding £130.82

Can they damage my credit rating if I don't pay them?

The story:

Visited VetsNow. Spent just shy of £300 and settled invoice at time of treatment, over the counter, as required. No problems.

Leave UK (for 6 months). A couple of months in (now) I come to know (through someone checking mail at my UK address on my behalf) that the vets have sent a couple of demands for £90.

They sent a letter stating my account has an outstanding balance of £90.

Anyway, in my absence they've sent the letter and now sent this onto ControlAccount PLC.

Now that I'm aware of all this I've written to VetsNow stating I'll pay the amount due to them happily - but unfortunately CA PLC is stating I shouldn't communicate further with VetsNow, let alone pay them - they want the money, plus their fee.

I haven't corresponded at all with CA PLC, the above regarding no longer contacting VetsNow and sending payment direct was mentioned in their letters.

The whole situation is a pain...

I don't mind paying for something they (the vets) forgot to bill me for, not at all, but I'm not happy to be forking out an extra £40 or so to pay CA PLC. Also, the vets haven't reached out via email or phone before passing this onto CA PLC - I think that peeves me a little.

Am I being unwise, should I just settle through CA Plc and cough up their fee?

Awaiting to see if VetsNow allow me to settle through them directly.

You say the vets sent demands for the £90 then near the end you say they didn't reach out to you.

Anyway its your credit history that would be affected not your score.

I don't know if your allowed to pay the vets directly, I dont see why not myself.

    I'd settle.

Many creditors don't keep 'reaching out' once their original invoices are ignored (unless of course they work for Four Tops Collection Agency).

Offer a settlement if you want, but I wouldn't hold out much hope.

They never invoiced for the balance due - just sent a letter saying it was overdue - no explanation of what it was for... It was the standard 'your account has outstanding debt message'.

Never ignored an invoice - should have made this more clear above.

Original invoice paid at the time. Some time later (after I'd departed UK) a 'your balance is overdue' letter was sent. There was no invoice to accompany the amount specified.
  • Update:
    Big thumbs up to VetsNow.

They've apologised for the inconvenience caused and recognised that the amount demanded was raised after the original invoice had been settled and have kindly waived the amount plus informed the debt collectors that the situation is resolved.

    Good.
Before I read this I was going to recommend not paying them and informing the debt collectors that the debt is disputed. You took your pet for treatment, were presented with a bill and paid it. If they forgot to add something to the bill that really is their fault not yours. If they had written to you nicely, apologising for their error and asking nicely if you would pay, you could have considered paying them. But they didn't and with that sort of attitude did not deserve to be paid.
