I am thinking of getting a new wireless router in New Year I have a Netgear DG384G V1.0 802.11b/802.11g but I have wireless problems on two pc's despite having bought new wireless cards with long aerial and I also put a long one on router. I can barely get wireless at all on our media pc in living room about 15 foot away due to two chimney breasts in line of sight.
I wonder with the 802.11n router may help. I am aware that you can go via mains but seems expensive for a more bandwidth and I gather a new standard is coming out soon

Have you checked for other wireless activity using Netstumbler? Is there any other device that could be causing interference? Video sender, cordless handsets etc. I have never experienced range problems even in old solid brick houses using various makes of standard 802.11b/g equipment. If you do change to n type, all of your equipment would probably need to be replaced e.g. the same manufacturers. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

I'm currently looking to upgrade my wireless to 11n mainly becasue I transfer large files over it the increased speed would really help. I thought the upgrade I did to 54mb was an improvement over the 10 I had originally but it just needs a kick up the !!! sometimes more and more wireless users round here havnt helped I was constantly monitoring the channes they were useing and finally settled on channel 3.
The main thing putting me off is having to replace all the addaptors as well to benefit from the speed boost, you looking at £200 for 2/3 machines with everything.0 -
If I move from dining room where router is to living room about 15 feet max I can access internet from a laptop thats more or less in line of site of router but just a few feet away hidden in a alcove side of a chimney breast the pc at most gets 2mbps but it doesn't actually work only if I move pc from the alcove does it work but still hit n miss.
I dont really want to move router or pc because router I have it connected to lan to two pcs and that would mean either moving them or re-routing ethernet cable.
I do transfer large files from time to time and I cant do it on the router to pc in living room, it works fine on two pcs upstairs although one is slower than other due to distance.
I do have others networks in area but all protected. I do have a dect phone in hallway but I changed channels on router several times0 -
swap your internal network adaptor for a usb one and use an extention cable to move it out of the alcove.
We have a similar problem with the wii and xbox 360, both hide in an alcove at the other side of the chimney we just move them forward slightly to get a connection.0
