Engine light

Hi everyone
Firstly, I can change a tyre and do the oil, but I do not know about a light that has come on :( but it looks scary. It's the engine emissions one.

It came on yesterday driving back from work (home to work is a 25 min journey down mainly country roads before I hit a road that has a white line down the middle!). The car didn't change in terms of having a feeling of losing power, not that I go fast down the country roads, don't get above 50 generally (being wary of pheasants, deer and other small things trying to cross roads), and the light didn't flash.

I'm pre-empting going to the garage and for mechanics/people who know more about cars than me, out there, so I don't look completely stupid, what I might be up against in terms of is the car going to die, or could it be rescued.

He's a Zafira 2008 1.9 diesel. Neighbour has a box thing and the light went out. He's been out for a run this morning (got up to 60) to the shops, light didn't come on, but then about 5 mins from home it reappeared.

Worst case scenario could I be looking at the car failing it's MOT - due early July. Or, happy scenario, it's could be something 'small' and is not going to break me as I can't afford a new car and the bus journey to work will take me over 2.5 hours one way!

Thank you :)

Get diagnostics done on it. Might want to Google if you can do a pedal test to read the fault codes (a lot of vauxhalls have the ability), if not you'll need to get it plugged in. Likely emissions related, could be cat (£££) might be a sensor.
