I think you are mistaken.
But if you cannot, or will not, tell us your departure station then I'm sorry but I cannot help further.
Have a pleasant journey.
OK, the station is Crawley but I reckon you'd get the same results from any other station in West Sussex.
By the way, I am grateful for everyone's help and I'm sorry if I'm coming across as uncooperative, that really is not my intention.2kWp Solar PV - 10*200W Kioto, SMA Sunny Boy 2000HF, SSE facing, some shading in winter, 37° pitch, installed Jun-2011, inverter replaced Sep-2017 AND Feb-2022.0 -

No offence intended silvercar, but how is any of that relevant?2kWp Solar PV - 10*200W Kioto, SMA Sunny Boy 2000HF, SSE facing, some shading in winter, 37° pitch, installed Jun-2011, inverter replaced Sep-2017 AND Feb-2022.0

From slightly south of crawley I've found buying a train ticket to east croydon, and then using oyster/contactless to st pancras can be cheaper. Its a bit of pain since you have to leave though barrier with ticket and then re-enter the barrier with oyster/contactless.0

Why does everybody keep telling me I've got it wrong? I am simply quoting the fares given to me by southernrailway.com. Here's the Bognor Regis fare:

Crawley -> London St Pancras
According to Journey Planner, the cheapest Single ticket is a Travelcard at £17.20.
A return ticket that is valid for a week is a standard Off-Peak Return (not valid on the London Underground) is £36.40. For some reason, it does not specify 2x Travelcard there or under the "2 Singles" option.
It's not a £60 disparity, but it does seem odd.
If you put in St Pancras -> Crawley, it does not offer a Travelcard, but a £24.40 Off-peak Single, suggesting that a Travelcard is not a valid option when travel does not start from the "home" station.0 -

Yes, I hadn't appreciated that you had quoted the period return fare.
But since you won't tell anyone what journey you want to make there's no way for us to check and help you.0 -
For a single adult, you are right, the return is only roughly double the travelcard fare, but when I try to book for the whole family I still get the large disparity between a return at £90.35 and two travelcards at £65.10. This is largely because I completely lose the child £2 flat fare.
Yes, I see £90.35 from your details, too.
I think what you have there are multiple discounts ceasing to apply when "booking" from the London end.
I would suggest having a look at Crawley -> London Victoria. That seems to give access back to cheaper fares and some of the discounts.
I am seeing a cheapest (2 x Single x 4 passenger) total fare of £18.10 inward and £12.30 back on an Advance ticket (selected trains). Unfortunately the very cheapest fares seem to be London Victoria only (not London Terminals).
Single Fare - Outward journey£8.50 - 1 x Adult - Advance (Standard Class)
£4.00 - 2 x Child - Advance (Standard Class)
£5.60 - 1 x Senior - Advance (Standard Class)
Single Fare - Return journey£5.00 - 1 x Adult - Advance (Standard Class)
£4.00 - 2 x Child - Advance (Standard Class)
£3.30 - 1 x Senior - Advance (Standard Class)0
