Laying a paving slab as a door step

I've looked on youtube but can't find any videos about this.
I have paving slabs leading up to my front door but have always found the 'rise' a little too great to actually step comfortably from outside to in.
Can I simply lay a bought paving slab on top of the others already there, maybe with a bit of cement/mortar to adjust for height and stick it more firmly in position? I'm wondering if there are things to look out for.

My parents used that arrangement for several years without problems. The paving slabs were large heavy ones though, at least 60cm square, so were very unlikely to move unexpectedly.0

Having just a paving slab to increase the height would probably be a trip hazard.
If you wanted to split the one step into two it would be better to have a decent step up to your new slab then a smaller step into the house.0 -

Good point, although a fairly thick slab together with some thickness of cementing underneath should provide a reasonably tall uplift. Let's face it: a step of any kind can be a 'trip hazard'.0
