Feather-edge vs Lap-panel Fencing?

I have Lap-Panel fence panels and wondered if to gradually faze out in favour of slightly more expensive Feather-Edge versions.

Which version if the most durable?

No contest - feather-edge lasts much better.

Had a eight-and-a-half panel fence installed about twelve years ago.

It didn't take long before every high wind storm i.e. circa 45+ mph a panel or two would need replacing.
Finally lost our patience with it after Storm Imogen, when two to three panels and two posts needed replacing! By now probably at least half of the panels had been replaced - some more than once.

Since then (three years ago) no have had no problems.

Agreed, feather-edge is a lot more robust.

Another vote for feather edge, although probably twice the initial investment, it will last more than twice as long.

..and if you need to replace the posts go for concrete. No danger of them rotting!

My neighbour replaced a couple of panels that blew down on our adjoining fence. Fitted it himself, took a few hours.

He used overlapping treated planks which look great to me. Basically a top and bottom crossbar and then screwed planks on each side which leaves an air gap for wind to blow through but as they overlap on each side you can't see 'through' it.

Seems far stronger than panels and also unlikely to ever blow down.

What are peoples thoughts on this as opposed to buying panels?

Hit & Miss Fencing, very good for windy locations, but the ones you buy seem to be too far apart and can be seen past at the right angle.

2 doors up was repairing his fence 5 times a year until he got it.

Yes, same stuff - except my neighbour did it himself and it looks 10x stronger than in your picture :)

He's used 4x4 for the cross beams and 6x1"? planks for the up and down plus fitted a 6" wide treated plank on the top to stop water getting in down the cut ends. Plus his gaps are smaller, maybe 1" to 1.5" so better coverage of the gaps.

It looks like in your picture it's been made 'down' to a price as you say it's possible to see through. He just DIY'ed it properly instead of buying it in ready-made.

I'm certainly going to use that myself in the future if I need to replace a fence (technique, not the bought panels :D )
