I have had loans, credit cards in the past, how do i discover if i had ppi or not without using one of these ppi reclaim companies who end up taking most of the settlement fee?

You do what a claim firm would do; write to likely lenders (with a scattershot approach) asking them if they have any records of PPI. The older the finance, the less likely you will have any success. A claim firm would/could do no more.0

As Moneyineptidude says....please just write and enquire. Us nice folks who deal with these will then get back to you as promptly as we can. It will cost you the price of a stamp, or the time spent sending an email.
If there is then then a genuine reason for a Complaint, we will even investigate that for you as well. Absolutely no need to ever use a CMCI work in Data Protection and spend my days dealing with CMC's. Only here trying to help!!0
