wanted to know where i stand with my 12 months guarantee?

Options
Put simply, i purchase a product in January, and in June I discovered a fault. the manufacturer gave me a replacement, and told me the replacement guarantee starts when i purchased the original product, and not when i receive the replacement, is this true?

Yup ... guarantee (warranty) is extra to consumer rights and can have any reasonable terms attached. The warranty period starting from purchase (delivery) date is one of them. But even your consumer rights (law) apply from the same date, not the date of any repair or replacement.

However ... was the seller aware that you'd contacted the manufacturer? (Your rights are with the seller, not the manufacturer - unless that's who you bought from). If they were then they've now had their one attempt to provide a remedy (replacement in this case). If it fails again you can demand a refund (final right to reject) ... any such refund can be reduced to account for your time of ownership.

I don't understand why this is always a surprise when it comes up.
You bought an item, not the lifetime right for a replacement if they go wrong.

IMO if an item is replaced at one point even say 11 months in, the new item may go faulty after 6 weeks and since a year has passed they no longer have a claim.

Thats why I can understand peoples opinions on longer when a item is replaced.

So if they offer a 12 month guarantee and one person who has an item go wrong after 13 months isn't covered. But you think someone who has had the item replaced once after 11 months should then be able to claim again on the guarantee if it goes wrong again after the 12 months since purchase?

This means if you had an item replaced you get a longer guarantee than people who get an item repaired or one that doesn't go wrong. So how is that fair?

If that's what the terms of the warranty say, it's true. If that's not what the terms of the warranty say, it's not true.

    Hint: it's usually true.
