I booked a holiday mid April with a first choice/tui store.

2 weeks, all inclusive, Egypt, 2 adult 1 child.

Recently the reviews on tripadvisor for the booked hotel are appalling.

I spoke with the store i booked with on the 31st of May, explaining i would like to change hotels, told i would receive a call back that day. No call back.

Spoke again with them on the 1st June, again explained the situation, told would receive a call, Again no call.

3rd June once again i spoke with the store, explaining what i wanted to do. Finally received a call back, stating cos I am within 28 days of travel i need to pay an amendment fee of 90% cost of the original holiday. £2900.16 to pay. If it had been amended on the 31st May or 1st June it would of been £150.

Where do i stand on this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Russell

Where do you stand? At the mercy of their goodwill I'm afraid. You need to press the point that you tried (twice) to change before and they didn't get back to you.

Any reason you didn't keep trying after 31st March and left it a full two months before trying again, knowing about the 28 day limit? Could you have called in April?

Hang on a minute, are those dates correct? If you booked in April, why did you call in March to amend? Did you book in April 2018 or do you mean you called on 31st May to try to rearrange?
  • Aylesbury Duck, Thanks for the reply, was meant to say 31st May I tried to amend.

I see. In which case I would write to them setting out your attempts to engage them on the matter before the 28 day period and asking them to deal with your request as if it were on the date it was first received. I'm not sure whether that will get you anywhere or whether you're entitled to anything but it's worth a try.

Failing that, I would go on the holiday, make the best of it and see if the reality is as bad as the reviews. If it turns out to be a poor experience, make sure you catalogue and photograph what you need to and raise each issue in a prompt manner once there. These boards are full of people complaining about poor holiday experiences and wanting refunds once they back, but if you haven't raised the issues when there you haven't given the hotel/operator/resort a chance to resolve them.
