Thank you so much uknick for replying i do have the final figure of VAT owing as £935 I was informed by one of my accountants secretaries that I had a refund coming to me of this amount unfortunately she has now left the company but someone else took over the chase to get this refund for me but it has now come to a standstill nothing is happening, I spoke to my accountant the last time in march and he said although the money had now gone to the Crown usually for amounts under £2000 they sometimes released the money he was going to apply for the refund and I was to ring him in 2 weeks on his mobile if I hadn't heard anything I left it 2 months and despite several call to him he is not answering my calls, I have a copy of a letter from H M Customs that the secretary (who left) copied me into which states as a matter of law the money had now been transferred to the crown in which she said to me at least we know something is happening somewhere, my opinion is if I paid my accountant to do the accounts and all my VAT then they are responsible from the start of my business to the end and this should have been sorted long ago, I myself have never had any idea what happens re the VAT as they have had full responsibility of it, hope this makes sense, I feel sometimes that i am not very important in my accountants eyes as I am a small business compared to some of the companies they deal with but they were happy to deal with me all those years ago

Do you have the final accounts? As I said, if they show balances owing, on the face of it, the accountants were negligent to close the company down.

PS - any chance you could use paragraphs to make your responses easier to read?. Pet hate of mine when they're not used :)

You may well have a VAT statement dated August, but I'd like to know what the company's overall position with HMRC was.

For example, was there any corporation tax or PAYE liability still be be paid? If so, was the VAT refund used to offset this? That's why you need to look at your balance sheet at the time the company was closed down.

Also, just noticed you said you sold the company and it was then closed down. Who did you sell it to? If you did genuinely sell it, why would you be due any VAT refund? It would go to the new owners.

Thank you so much again for taking the time to come back to me

I have never done my own accounts so not sure what the position with HMRC was

I happened to speak to one of my accountants secretaries and asked if I needed to pay any VAT and she said then that I had a refund due of £935 and they would chase it up and get it back for me

The accountants dealt with the sale of the shop it was one of my reps who brought it and he kept on my old staff, the shop itself never closed, it is actually the limited company that was dissolved
all the PAYE and tax were settled

I need to try and see if Paul my ex accountant will see me and see what he now comes up with I feel he keeps fobbing me off, its as though £935 is nothing to them but to me its a lot of money

Did you transfer the VAT registration number over to the buyer? Is the buyer using your old VAT number or does he have his own different one?
It's a pretty standard thing to do for administrative ease etc., but often can turn into a mistake.

So, your company sold it's main asset, i.e. the shop and I assume all associated stock etc., and then closed down. I think this is becoming far more complicated than at first envisaged.

I can only ask, yet again, as to to what was in the final accounts on closure of company. Do you not have access to these? If not, you could let us have the company registration number and we can look it up at Companies House.
