Energy company not been billing me

Hi, I have just found out that during my energy switch last year the new energy company (Solarplicity) did not set up my account correctly and therefore have not been charging me for gas for the entire year. If I had not called them to enquire they wouldn’t even know about this. My question is should it be down to me to pay a Year’s worth of gas consumption now, when the company admit they were at fault for not setting it up correctly in the first place?

Yes, you have to pay for what you have used ... eventually

We have so many people on this forum who don't notice for a year or more they are not paying for gas or electricity or water.


If any company - not just energy companies - make a mistake, they have up to 6 years to rectify that mistake. In the same way if the mistake was overcharging you(and you didn't notice!) you have 6 years to claim a refund.


Normally when such a situation arises with gas/electricity the company will allow you to pay back over the same period as the debt built up.
