Please tell me that it really IS a low level warning, and not just the usual oil light... which is zero oil pressure...?

I'm not 100% but pretty sure the message says "Stop" and a picture of a oil can.

Get it towed to a garage. If you're lucky, no expensive damage has been caused. Don't push your luck by even starting the engine.

If the engine & bay is now covered in oil then a steam pressure wash would be needed. It needs lifting or towing to a garage. As for the cause and the fix only a garage would know that. FWIW my car was leaking oil and to fix it cost over £600, £60 for the steam clean, £270 for the faulty component and the rest in labour costs and VAT. They had to dismantle most of the engine bay to get access.

I'd say it's been run about 8 miles since the car warned her of no oil.
Are there really people out there that don't know that you must not drive a car with the oil light on, or the consequences if you do?

I wouldn't worry too much about the oil leak in that case as you may now be needing a new engine. That isn't a low oil levelwarning, that's a "I've got no oil pressure and all the moving metal parts inside the engine are now scraping chunks out of each other so stop right now this instant and immediately turn off" warning.

Snapped bonnet cable might be a common problem on your car with a known fix, try youtube. Would a mobile mechanic be cheaper than recovering the car to the garage?
