Hi,
Does anyone have success storirs of finding a job after dismissal? I was dismissed yesterday (along with 4 others) dye to using company skype during working hours. A lot 2as work chat however there was some innane gossip and moaning about others not pulling weight. I accept im in the wrong.
Totally blindsided taken into a meeting and dismissed on spot. Im on probation so understand they dont have to give a reason. Others not an treated the same.
My worry is getting another job - will i? Can i leave this post off future applications?
Thanks

How long were you in the job? What were you doing before?
Some applications specifically ask if you were dismissed.0 -
I was 5 months in job. Previous job 19 years.0

You can leave this job off your CV, though depending on how long you worked there it may raise further questions of why you were unemployed for X amount of time.
You, of course, will be able to find a job after dismissal. Things may look bleak now but in a few months it'll all be but a distant memory.
EDIT:I was 5 months in job. Previous job 19 years.
Oh, scratch my above comments, I wouldn't pretend you were unemployed for 5 months.....
When they inevitably ask 'why did you leave?', I would go down the lines of 'first in, first out'.Know what you don't0 -
Its the reference im.worried about. I honestly cant remember what they said if it was dismissal or failure of probation
I had thought of saying i took time to.spend with kids but lying doesnt sit right with me.
This is all a total mess.0 -

I think making any excuse for being unemployed for 5 months will almost certainly look worse than being dismissed.
If it means anything, in my 10+ years of employment (I'm not that old), I've never had a reference checked - I know this because I speak to all my previous employers.
They are also severely limited in what they can say. I've had to do a reference check in the past for someone and it was just an email saying "what was their role" and "what dates did they work for you", that was literally it.
I would say something along the lines of "unfortunately as the newest employee, I was first on the chopping block", then if they do provide a reference, it somewhat supports what you've said. I certainly wouldn't explicitly say I was fired for gossiping at work!Know what you don't0 -

I speak as an employer, but not for all as we all have different views, but it really wouldn't bother me that you'd used Skype a couple of times. I'd expect to hear that it was either the run on from a business meeting or that it was a one off on a quiet day.
You had 19 years somewhere else, which says a lot. We are quite a relaxed company and I find some companies views on minor indiscretions quite draconian.Yes I'm bugslet, I lost my original log in details and old e-mail address.0 -

Exactly this. I have a few staff I oversee and I'd be pig-ignorant to expect that they work 100% of the time from when they get in to when they leave. I'd expect them to at least send a couple of messages whilst at work.
I think what has actually happened in the the OP's case is that in their Skype conversations (in which featured "innane gossip and moaning about others not pulling weight"), there was probably some explicit messages regarding their managers who may happened to have see these. They likely don't cite the messages directly because I don't know if that constitutes some form of privacy breach?Know what you don't0 -
I dont think any names were mentioned but gripes were made. Im annoyed at myself and should havd known better but i cant change the.past just need to look forward. I know i wont get a reference and if i do they will say i was dismissed. Its all a mess.
Thanks everyone for your advice.0 -
Technically saying you were unemployed for five months is not that bad in reality, I've known people be unemployed for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and longer years and walk straight into a job when they wanted to. The problem that would cause more issues then would be if they approached the previous employer of 19 years and asked the reason you left and they said you left for a new role, then they could ask about it and if you have missed it off then you have explaining to do.0

For what it's worth a lot of references now just state dates worked only.
I had some pals who reckoned agencies were easier to get working through, I disagree! my experience has been one agent wanted character references from a particular list of only those suitable to write one, ie their role they hold deems them as suitable, for each gap going over 42 days.
I've found smaller companies more relaxed about references but often they have no policies.
Would I leave the job off: No
Every employer bar one this year has made references required pretty clear at time of job offer, even in the event of not much else. Requirements have varied wildly from last two to X amount of years.0
