Can you change electricity company if you are in debt with the current one

Is that possible and if not technically, does it happen alot anyway ie the new company are just interested in making money and do it anyway?

I know people who owe money to one electric company but are with another now but thats because they moved home.

(In debt cant afford to pay electric and debt both, cant even afford electricity period duie to severe health problems )

Not sure if this relates to your previous posts but thought I'd drop in and let you know that if you want to change supplier from Spark, you'd need to make sure any debt on your smart meter was under £500, and you'd have to transfer under something called a "Debt Assignment Protocol". Worth doing an online search for "Debt Assignment Protocol" for more information on that.

As I've mentioned in my other posts, please contact us directly, as we'd be happy to help you.

    Kind regards

With all due respect, what good is it going to do you even if you can switch?

By your own admission you can't even afford to pay for the energy you're using. All switching is going to do is result in you racking up more debt that you'll probably not be in a position to pay off.

    Speak to someone like CAB.

If you were allowed to switch companies when you had a substantial debt, people would continually switch leaving a trail of bad debts.

It was up to £200 with prepay but I think the leaving supplier could object if they were not being paid (as in there was issues paying them) and it depends on the new supplier obviously being willing and happy to accept the 'debt' as it transfers to them.

Most new company’s now will complete a credit check before taking you on. So you may be declined due to your debt that’s been added to the meter
