Hi all,
I have just had a reply from MBNA saying my credit card had PPI on it. It was from December 2005.
I am just filling in the form on the MBNA website. One of the sections says,
Whatis the reason for your complaint? please tell us anything you remember about the sale.
This was 15 years ago and I presume I just applied for the card online. I wouldnt have wanted PPI as at the time I lived with my parents and had no bills, a steady job and only used the card for the odd small purchase to help with my credit score.
It does say these fields are optional, but should I fill them in or is it fine to just leave them blank?
Thanks

If you don't remember, leave it blank.0

If you applied for the card online, it may have been a tick box to get PPI:
If it was opt-out (i.e. untick a box or tick to say you don't want it) it will probably be upheld.
If it was opt in for PPI (i.e. you tick a box to say you want it) you probably weren't miss-sold unless the wording on the form is considered to be leading you to take it out (they will know this if the FOS have previously ruled either way)
Otherwise, the PPI could have been sold over the phone when the card was activated
A steady job proves you were eligible for the policy so isn't miss-selling reason
If you only spent small sums and paid them off in full every month (as you would be doing to improve your credit rating, paying off the minimum only harms it) then you wouldn't have paid any PPI as it was only charged when you had a balance on the card.
PPI was typically charged around 80p per £100 of debt on the card so if you only spent small sums you wouldn't have paid much PPI if you did carry a balance so they'd probably auto-pay anyway regardless of the merits of the case
Be honest on the form and you can't go wrong, never guess or make things upSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
