looking for a air cooler for my house.
will it cool the room in the same way a/c unit will? i am only put off a/c units because of high costs to run them-
can anyone personally recomend a cooler etc that is cheap to run?
the room size is 16 x 12ft

No, they don't really work; AC is the only practical way of cooling a room. Opening windows to get a breeze going through the house is the cheap alternative.0

Modern inverter split pack heat pumps do not cost the earth to run, if the home is well insulated and blinds or curtains used to minimise solar gain from doors and windows.
1kWh of leccy will provide roughly 3.5 to 4 kWh of cooling (or heating in winter).
After around 30 mins of cooling our units start to 'tick over' to maintain the comfort level. We run the bedroom one all night. Not noticed any significant change in electric consumption since installing them.0 -

Agreed. A high powered fan with a block of ice or cold water in front of it also does the trick!0
