Returning a SNAD abroad

I purchased some embroidery thread from an overseas seller and when it arrived it was not the branded cotton thread as described but anonymous and polyester.
I contacted the seller and eventually they stopped offering me a partial refund and accepted that they had to refund in full. The seller expected me to pay the postage for this myself so I had to push for a pre-paid label as the item was clearly SNAD.
I then had a message from eBay saying that the seller accepted the refund and I should expect a pre-paid label shortly. This was followed by a message from eBay stating the seller could not send me one and that I should contact them to make alternate arrangements.....
Now the seller wants me to send the item to a UK based distribution company (P2P) and when they get the package back to China, they will then refund me for both postage* and the item.
I am looking for advice - has something like this happened to anyone else?
Sorry about the long essay. Sometimes my bloody-mindedness bites me on the backside
(*It is a 'large letter' sized packet so I assume I would have to use a signed for service rather than rely on the automatic proof of postage that goes with small parcels.)
I can escalate this on 5th June.

I agree, a phone call to eBay, be polite but firm and they should refund you without expecting you to return. If that happens let seller know that you are happy to return the threads wherever they want as soon as they supply a tracked pre paid label.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Thank you for the advice, a job for tomorrow

For the record, here is the text of the communication from eBay:
"Contact the seller
Hello XXXX,
Seller ZZZZZZZ let us know that they can't buy a return postage label for you to return 45pc A***** Cross Stitch Strandeds Cotton Embroidery Thread Floss Whloesale UK.
The seller is responsible for return postage costs, so contact them to arrange return postage."
I assume this was automatically generated?I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
Update: very sorry to have taken this long to report back.
Thank you for the advice -I have had a full refund via eBay CS. This isn't the company's first time not playing by the SNAD rules.
And, a small victory - they are no longer describing the unbranded junk threads as "Anchor" (I think I might have a new hobby as an embroidery thread activist
). I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
We are going through the same at the moment. Seller says they can't send postage. Item came from China although they were apparently a UK selker. They have said they have several locations around the UK but when we have googled them, they don't exist. The goods are counterfeit so have now opened case with ebay and are awaiting refund. They are Hoya camera filters and looks like they have sold hundreds of them with good feedback but they are fakes!0

The seller in my case was also in China and refused to send a label - it would have cost them more than double the purchase price - I did not trust them to refund the costs of i returned it at my own expense.
Because they agreed to the return I was I not able to escalate automatically, so using the eBay call-back system was the way forward.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
I didn't need to return the item, ebay refunded me and say they are looking into the seller due to counterfeit items, in the meantime the seller is still selling the counterfeit items!0
