OP did state it was a regular payment, so that could encompass STO, RT and DDr - unless they come back to tell us, we'll never know.
I don't use prepaid cards but what is the mechanism for getting the funds onto the plastic? - is it via an ATM, or is it not actually stored on the card but in some third party account somewhere and using the plastic accesses that third party store of funds?0 -

Childminders are registered with local authorities - so if they are in the wrong according to the council they perhaps could be 'lent' on to refund you (partially anyway).

Slightly curious about how how are paying a childminder using a prepaid mastercard and why the council are making these payments to a prepaid mastercard as opposed to a bank account?

What retailer name/location appears against the transactions when they are processed?

Do you have the 'notice of termination' given by the childminder? Just wondering whether there are any chargeback rights to take advantage of. If the recurring transaction (regular payment) was tied to the contract 'under notice' and there is no documentary evidence of any new contract, I would think the retailer would be expected to cease taking the money when they ceased providing the service (regardless of whether you cancelled the regular card payment).

Sounds unlikely this was actually a card payment, so small claims court will be the next step (starting with a letter before action).

Sorry, but I don't understand how stored value on a MasterCard product can be deducted without it being via a card transaction. Perhaps someone can educate me on this one.0

Sorry, still not getting it - and I'm sorry that this isn't strictly relevant to the thread content - but do you 'log in' to the stored value card account and then have a menu command that allows you to make a payment to another bank account?
If so, then, as Eco-warrior suggests, this sort of card could be used like a current account. I am guessing that the card has a sort code and 8-digit account number for bank-style payments/deposits and a 16-digit card number for use in MasterCard-accepting retailers.
If the payments are not card transactions initiated by the child-minder and made with the 16-digit number (and processed through MasterCard) then that definitely rules out any Chargeback remedy.
It now seems to be a contractual issue where a payment has been made voluntarily (albeit not intentionally) and I don't think there is any easy way to get your money back beyond negotiation/legal action or attempting to get the council and/or any child-minding regulatory body to put pressure on the child-minder.0 -
my wife is a childminder and this all seems very odd.
Usually notice period is one month from either side, secondly Childminders very rarely give notice unless there is a real issue.
Thirdly she needs to be careful involving her "partner" and im sure Ofsted would look very dimly and withdraw her license if he has made threats.
Fourthly i have never heard a childminder doubling their hourly rate, ensure you tell her that you'll contact HMRC to inform them of the rates she's charging.
This all sounds very odd.0
