Right to buy

Put in go buying our council house but this as been rejected by the council fraud department.

Excuse I was given is due to the fact we have a benefit overpayment from a couple of years ago we are currently paying off.

They say cause we owe this money we can’t buy the house, surely this can’t be right?.

Can this be stopped because of this seems harsh to me as I’m buying an house if I owe money elsewhere what’s it got to do with the council

It might depend on why you have an overpayment and why you didn't pay it back as soon as you realised that you had been overpaid. Who spotted the overpayment? You or the council?

Might come down to affordability If you're paying of another debt, you can't afford a mortgage.

All arrears or debts owed have to be cleared before an RTB application will be accepted.

Clear the arrears and then reapply. It is written into the RTB rules.

Was the benefit who noticed it I offered to pay £10 a week but when the letter came they put £10 a month so I thought well you mistake yet again so I will just pay £10 per month as it’s in black and white.

I’m fed up with there mistakes and it’s us who suffers from it,how can you send payslips in etc and then over a year later they decide there’s an overpayment

you are expecting to receive a bung from the taxpayer

you owe money to the taxpayer

entirely right and proper that "it" be held up until you pay off the debt.

After all, if you can afford to buy a property, then you have the money available to clear your debts. Surely even you can understand that?

I think it is absolutely scandalous benefit over payments are being paid back at £10 a month.

How much do you actually owe? £100 is an easy fix so stop messing around with this £10 a month stuff. If you owe £3k stop looking to buy this house you can't afford it
An answer isn't spam just because you don't like it......
  • Can I ask when you applied to buy, did they give you a value for the house etc at that point or just reject you straight away?

I am wanting to apply but I am unsure how much they are going to value the house for, what discount amount is being applied etc to see what I am aiming towards x

You apply. They accept or deny your application and advise of the discount. You confirm you wish to continue and the property is valued. Then it's offered at valuation minus discount. You go ahead or don't based on this information.
