Problem setting up new online banking payee with Barclays

This is probably not going to be common problem but it is for me and may be for others with similar disability issues.. I have MS and loss of hand and arm control. Barclays have instigated a new procedure for setting up a payee not already on your lists. The new procedure sets a time limit of 120 seconds to complete the transaction or it won't complete. If you can't do this, you need to contact Barclays by phone and go through their authentication process. This is annoying due to the time it takes but not practical if you have someone new in your room who wants payment.
Before this shiny new method was introduced, setting up a new payee wasn't a problem, there couldn't have been any time limitation. There isn't even an on-screen timer to show how much time you had left and the pathetically small pinsentry doesn't help.
I know that this problem may not affect many people and although I have contacted them a couple of times about this, I'm unsure of how to get this sorted quickly.
Any ideas would be appreciated and have any others found this problem?

Realistically, how often are you likely to need to pay someone new that urgently?

You can get a larger, accessible pin sentry or/and you can use the Barclays app to act as a substitute to generate the code.

Definitely worth contacting them (or any other bank) if you have disability related issues and see what they have to help.

  • True, not often but when I need to, it's impossible for me.

Have you considered using the pinsentry functionality in the Barclays app? I don't have a Barclays account so can't say for sure what it is like but it may give you a bigger screen to work with. And now I look more closely I can see there is an Accessible version of the card reader available that has a bigger screen and can also be voice activated.

  • Thank you all for your help. Actually, I had asked previously about a larger pinsentry machine and was told by two Barclays people that they didn't do one. However, it seems that they do so I've ordered one. Whether that helps me 'beat the clock'remains to be seen!
  • I had exactly the same problem tonight. If Barclays could just extend this time to 180 seconds, and, as you say, have a countdown timer, this would probably solve the problem.

Why should people with health problems or who struggle with vision have to phone up and go through extended procedures? Life is hard enough already.
