Smart Meters - What range possible?

Hi,

I'm keen to get a smart meter, but the meters are in the basement (I live in a flat).
Do they all work on a direct link (2.4GHz?) as opposed to anything else?

I've tried one about 5 years ago and it was *very* intermittent having to travel through about 3 floors.

Just wondering if anyone else had experience here?

I have one in a cellar and the supplier ran a cable to a transmitter/battery back where a signal can be received.

Does your energy supplier fit smart meters in flats? I ask because I've tried to get one off Npower but all I get is a message saying they aren't fitting them in buildings like mine. I even get full 4g reception in the meter cupboard.

It was nPower that installed mine a few years ago. Maybe they have a new policy. The smart meter submitted data back to them fine - via GSM I guess - but was flakey when talking back to the device in my flat.
