Hi
Can anyone suggest some links that I can read to start giving me a better knowledge of pensions please?
I just want to try and understand a bit more so that I can plan better for the future and understand if my pension is doing what it’s meant to. Novice at it all really.
Many thanks.

Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0

For someone just starting, I would read up on risk and portfolio design. This is very good: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Deep-Risk-History-Portfolio-Investing/dp/0988780313/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Deep+risk&qid=1559355058&s=gateway&sr=8-1
Here is another must read on how our brains work so that you can understand and fight impulses https://www.amazon.co.uk/Your-Money-Brain-Science-Neuroeconomics/dp/0743276698/ref=sr_1_1?crid=ULEW1BL7XSSM&keywords=your+money+and+your+brain&qid=1559355197&s=gateway&sprefix=Your+money+and+your+%2Caps%2C254&sr=8-1
Next try A Random Walk Down Wall Street or https://www.amazon.co.uk/Smarter-Investing-Simpler-Decisions-Financial/dp/0273785370/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1DSZ554D5RC3R&keywords=smarter+investing&qid=1559355766&s=books&sprefix=Smarter+%2Cstripbooks%2C264&sr=1-1
Finally read up on mechanics https://www.amazon.co.uk/DIY-Pensions-Simple-Retirement-Planning/dp/15207826830 -

I found this one a great help. It's regularly updated when there is new legislation: "Pension Magic" - how to make the taxman pay for your retirement.
https://www.taxcafe.co.uk/pensionmagic.html
Subjects covered include:
All relevant tax and pension changes announced in the most recent Budget.
A plain-English guide to the new pension rules:
How much you can put in
How and when you can take money out
How to maximise your tax savings at each stage
Why pensions are still the best tax saving device for salary earners and business owners... with full Government approval!
Why higher-rate taxpayers will typically enjoy 41.67% more income by putting their savings in a pension instead of an ISA.
Why pensions are now one of the best inheritance tax shelters and can be used to pass wealth tax free down the generations.
How a couple can increase their retirement income by over 30% by correctly choosing who makes pension contributions.
Pensions vs buy-to-let - Detailed examples showing the benefits and drawbacks of using your pension savings to invest in property.
How to boost your income by 77% by investing in a Lifetime ISA first and then a pension, thereby enjoying two rounds of tax relief!
How to make a backdated tax relief claim (a quarter of higher-rate taxpayers do not claim all the tax relief they are entitled to).
How parents with child benefit can get a tax refund of up to £72 for every £100 they invest in a pension.
How to enjoy income tax relief and national insurance relief (including the 13.8% paid by your employer) with a salary sacrifice pension.0 -
Thanks all. I’ve read the information on the pension advisory website and MSE. Both provide a very basic background and not really what I’m after. I’ll check out the rest.0
