HELP! I've been sent a bill for 2 years worth of electricity

Options
Good morning.

Yesterday I recieved a bill from Co-OP energy for £819.40!!!
I switched to Bulb back in April sending them my meter readings to switch. I then recieve this massive bill. On looking at my account it appears they have only been taking money for gas.

I was paying £45 per month then over the winter my direct debit went up to £65.
When I switched to co-op I sent them details of my smart meter so they could continue getting regular readings, I also had the meter reading man round a few times durring my time with them.

Lookng at my annual statements online there are only statements for gas. So I'm therefore assuming that they have never updated my electricity usage since opening.in 2016.

Can I argue this as I believe I set everything up correctly my end, sent the money to them when requested, never missed a payment. I did not send them meter readings as thinking that my so called smart meter would do it for me plus the meter reading person coming round who read the gas and electric meter.

I cannot afford to pay this bill, and do not see why I should when it is their admin error.

Please help.

You must have known you were not paying for electricity and at some stage you would need to pay up. You can't expect for others to pay for you. Maybe you can ask to pay in instalments.

Any company can correct an error. Even if the admin error had overcharged and you were due a rebate!!

There is a code on back-billing and there is a possibility that the code could apply in your case and if it did you would only be liable for the last 12 months of electricity consumed.

Essentially the code requires that you also be proactive in ensuring you have been billed correctly.

And what does your Bulb account have to say - - are there gas and electric readings ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • I set up my account when I switched to Co_OP set up the DD according to what they requested, sent them my smart meter details and let them get on with it. My DD went up and down throughout the time I was with them so assumed (wrongly as it seems) that they were receiving the smart meter readings confirmed by the occasional visit from the meter reading person. I didn't log in to my account as I'd assumed that between £45 -£65 per month was covering both gas and electric.

I am not expecting someone else to pay for it. I would like them as the supplier to take some responsibility for their admin error and perhaps help me out by reducing the bill.
  • Bulb have said the readings are correct and that they have both gas and electric readings from me.

You have received two years interest free energy, you need to take some responsibility for your actions.

Get into the habit at looking at your Bulb account every month and check the info there particularly the bottom line

..or lack of actions, ie: not checking bills. You can't be a money saver without knowing what you use and what you're paying for it.

Make a proposal to them to repay over a period that you can manage? That'll be another interest free loan, so don't be too unreasonable!

If the Co-op have not billed you for gas at all, you are entitled to claim under the 'Back Billing Agreement'

This states that where a supplier has failed to bill for over 12 months or more, they can only bill for the last 12 months, and those 12 months are calculated back from the day they did manage to produce a bill.
