My daughter and young grandson live with us. His room is North facing and we have central heating and double glazing his room has 2 outside walls. He is still in a cot and I worry as his room is cold. We have done the usual stuff to help like thick curtains but I now feel we need additional heat. I am wondering about an oil filled radiator for this winter he is still in a cot. I have no idea what size to get and would appreciate any help and advice on this. Is this a good idea or not? Winter hasn't really arrived but his room is cold already. Room size 9ft x9ft approx 9ft high. The loft is well insulated and we also have a loft conversion but he is on the middle floor.

if you live here in the NW you need a bloody big one!
seriously, any size would probably be ok as long as you dont expect to put baby in the room and then switch it on from zero degrees?
BQ do 2 sizes, 500w and 1000w, both under 20 quid.Get some gorm.0 -
What is the room temperature?. Get a thermometer and check it. If it's 20C or more, that should be fine."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

If you own your home, would you be able to have cavity wall insulation in your house? You really do benefit from it, especially in north facing rooms.
Lot's of energy companies do special discount offers on the installation & it really is worth every penny. People on certain benefits can get it done for free. http://www.warmfront.co.uk/The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

Well stop worrying.;) I'm one of millions whose childhood was in a house with a single coal fire in the living room - and no supplementary heat whatsoever. My bedroom window had amazing patterns on it in the Winter - from the ice on the inside!!
Just make sure that his night clothes / bedding form a multi-layer cover, and that he can't kick them off. And that he is warm when put in the cot - then he'll stay that way.
If your conscience really dictates some supplementary form of heating. Then go for an oil filled convector of no greater than 1k output. BUT ..... fix it to the wall via a fused socket. Do not have free standing heating equipment if the youngster has any access to the floorIf you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Anyone know the approx running cost of 1kw of heating per hour?Trying to keep it simple...0

Thanks for this tip on fastening to wall as next year he will be about more. No problem with fused socket as OH is a sparky just wasn't sure on output required.:) I too remember patterned windows on the inside and running across the landing, no carpet, with bare feet to go to the loo.Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes0

Just above 10p (average) .... if it's on constantly and the thermostat isn't tripping it out periodically. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Too affluent:rolleyes: . At that time - ours was 50metres up the back garden - and even the torch was cold. And we won't discuss the glazed (Izal??) loo paper. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
