Annual season ticket

I have an annual season ticket with GWR and need to pause or refund it as I am pregnant so will not be using the ticket when I am on maternity leave. I’ve read up on the GWR website that they will only refund you the difference of what I paid for my annual ticket and the cost of a normal ticket for the period I have used it to date, which basically means i’ll hardly receive anything back despite still owing over £1,300 on my credit card which I used to purchase it! I can’t see anywhere on their website about being able to pause the ticket which is really what I want to do as will need it again when I go back to work. Can anyone offer any advice on this and whether I have any rights as a consumer? Thanks

You have no legal right to "pause" the ticket, regardless of pregnancy.
However, you may get a goodwill gesture if you write them a polite letter.0 -

Which makes perfect sense to me.
If this wasn't how they worked out a refund, anyone could buy a season ticket, use it for a short time then cash it in for a pro-rata refund thus getting the benefit of reduced fares without having to pay full price for the season ticket.0 -
You don't have any rights to a pause or a refund at the rate you bought it. As the last poster says, if they allowed pro rata refunds anyone needing a ticket for less than a year, say 9 months, would buy an annual ticket and get a refund at the 9 month point.
You'll be no worse off than if you had bought normal tickets for the period in question, so you haven't actually lost money, you've just lost the benefit of the annual ticket and the saving it gave you in the first place.0 -
I think pause vs refund are different things. I wouldn't expect a pro-rata refund, but I think their point is it's not worth it if pausing isn't available.
I should note that on that basis, indeed you've not lost as above, you just dont get the annual benefit. And you have at least gained the extra benefits of the gold card part for the period.Peter
