I would say in terms of worldwide acceptance, VISA & Mastercard are equal. AMEX's acceptance is less compared to the former 2.

I think it's best to evaluate the worthiness of the financial product, as opposed to whether is it a VISA, Mastercard or AMEX.

The only reason I could think of having two different card types is when one of their network is down, you can use the other card (as seen in the news recently when the Mastercard system was down). However, I believe things like this are rather rare!

No, its not necessary to have all 3.

However, it can be quite useful to have both a Mastercard and Visa - not so much in the UK (unless one of their systems are down) but that occasionally when abroad one card is more accepted in one country or another..

I've travelled widely in Europe and USA using my Goldfish Mastercard. This summer, however in Switerland and Italy it just didn't work. I'd booked the ferry and several hotels with it before I went so they wern't blocked transactions because of unexpected activity. No explanation.
Fortunately we could use DH's Saga Mastercard so it pays to take more than one card but as said above, can be Visa or Mastercard

I think it's very useful to have 2, in case there's a problem with one.

I've never seen anywhere that only accepts one of visa & mastercard, it seems that always both are accepted.

I had an AMEX card but I got embarrassed when small retailers asked if I would mind not using it due to high charges and some places don't accept it, so if you want to reduce the numbers then definitely dump AMEX.

I have - not in the UK but in some other countries.

In general, VISA is more accepted in North America and Mastercard in Europe.. and then you get those places which dont like any credit cards..
