hi there,
my mums dog had fits from the age of 2 and after about six months she was given tablets to help control the fits so she maybe only had one every couple of years after that, she was a black labrador and lived a full and happy life,we were always told when she was having a fit to just leave her to come to by herself as you could end up being bitten(not the dogs fault)but one thing i will say is she lived to be 17 years old and was always a great and happy dog .0 -
Hi all. Sorry to jump onto this thread but mu uncles dog has epilpsy and he takes 6 x 60mg Epiphen a day. Does any body know anywhere they could be purchased maybe in 1000's to get them cheaper. 1000 for him is less than 6 months supply.
Thanks

Himy dog Milo, an English Cocker Spaniel has had epilepsy for about 4 years now, since he was 18 months old. The first fit he had was really scarey and i didn't know what it was - i never thought dogs could be epileptic! Anyway, he started taking medication - epiphen - and this controlled it for about a year and a half, the he started fitting again every day! This was quite distressing to see but after upping his pills and giving him potassium bromide too, the fits are less now. He still has them, bizarrely almost every fortnight, to the hour, but sometimes can go 4-6 weeks without any fits. When they do come along they are usually in pairs! Like most others here, i make sure he can't injure himself, keep calm, talk quietly to him, even when he's fitting, and when he's up to it, i give him a cracker with loads of jam or lemon curd or something else sugary on it as apparently, the fit makes their blood sugar level decrease so some sugar can help aid the recovery - i read this on the internet somewhere. Although this doesn't make any difference to his fits, it does seem to aid his recovery.Anyway, the reason i posted was to say i have recently started getting his medicine online and it's half the price of the vets. The problem with the epiphen is you can't get a repeat prescription so can only get a month at a time but i have a great vet who is happy to give me a prescription each month - as all vets should. I also get a prescription for his bromide. The one thing to stress though is the medication can damage their liver so it is best to ask the vet for blood checks every 6 months - which they should do anyway.Hopefully Milo will live to be an old dog - he is a very much loved member of this little family and when he's not had a fit he's as normal as every other dog you see messing about on the beach or in the park so it's not the end of the world to have an epileptic dog.Sadly i think it's becoming more common due to the all the inbreeding that goes on from greedy, immoral breeders  , so if anyone else is thinking of getting a puppy, it goes without saying that make sure it is from a reputable breeder and has all the right papers.Good luck and I'm sure all will be well.0

Hi UKroseblue
I have an epileptic staffie, (that I wrote about a while back) I was just wondering if you could let me know the site that you get your dogs medication from if you wouldn't mind. My Jake has just had his dose upped to the maximum he can have due to his weight, and is now on pottasium bromide so he rapidly runs out of medication.
Many thanks if you can help0 -
Hi Chipper2407
i got the Bromide solution from www.petdrugsonline.co.uk. They have free p&p for small prescription items. I have also used www.petmeds.co.uk who used to have free p&p but no longer do. Hope this helps.0 -
I've come a bit late to this thread as I don't come here often.
I have an 11 year old Springer x Lab. He started having fits in 1999, they could be a few weeks apart or as long as 15 months. The vet never put him on any medication until February 2005 when he started having around 5 fits within 12 hours. He has 1.5 tablets of 30mg Epiphen twice daily and (touch wood and whistle) he has not fitted since July 2005.
I know all situations are different but he has had a great life so far and can still walk for an hour on the beach and chase a ball about at his age.
The fits are far worse for us owners then they are for the dog, they know nothing about it and when it's all over he justs looks at me as if to say "Come on then where's me dinner or come on walk time".0 -
HI all.
My 5 year old jack russell Lucy started having fits at christmas. We have been to the vets and had all tests done and she has found that the bile acids in Lucy's liver are high. They told us to make an appointment to give her a liver scan, which we did,and they said they have detected nothing unusual. We were sent away with 2 weeks of antibiotics as there may be an infection thats causing it.Any way she went 4 weeks without a seizure, then the other night she had 2 violent one within 6 hours,so i rang the vet next day and was advised to bring her in so that they can repeat all the tests she has had so far.I told the vet that i thought this was unnecessary as she only had the tests 4 weeks ago,but she just said that it was important to do them again to see if the bile acids are still high.I am getting rather frustrated with this and wonder if i should get a second opinion, what do others think?0 -
my first dog started having fits after being hit on the head by a car, his first fit was about 6 months later, the vet said he was epilepsy and he was on phenobarbitone for the rest of his life, which was a good 6 years later, unfortunately he went into a fit and never came round but he was 13 when he passed away0
