Email, IMAP and Outlook...

Options
Hopefully this is easy to answer.

I use 1and1 (Ionos) for my email using an IMAP setup. The mail is viewed on a PC using Outlook.

Outlook has decided to stop working - I can send but not receive email and it won't let me repair, or change the outgoing mail settings (although they are as 1and1 instruct).

If I remove the email account from my PC will it clear the emails from my 1and1 account? I basically think the best thing is to delete the email account from my PC and then add it again.....but I don't want to lose all the stuff from the 1and1 account (if that makes sense)?

Thanks for the help.

Think of IMAP as a "mirror" if you like. When you look at a mail account in Outlook that's set it up IMAP its a direct copy of what's on the server.

So in other words if you delete an item in Inbox in Outlook it would delete it on the server and you get a strikethrough line until the two sync back up.

Therefore removing the account from Outlook will not affect the contents of the mail on the server, this is in contrast to the legacy POP3 configuration which basically (by default) downloads everything and then removes it from the server. If you was to do that and then wipe the machine without saving the Outlook file, all the messages are gone.

Thank you. I did remove the account from the PC. I've clearly got a problem on the PC because now I cannot add in any other email account. I've tried to add the original account but get an error that "there's been a problem" so I tried to add a hotmail and a gmail and the same issue. Now I have outlook but with no way of having my mail on it. Any ideas? Can I remove outlook and reinstall it?

As an aside, I did try to check the disc which came back ok but I thought I would try and reinstall windows and start with a clean machine......It started ok and as it went through the keyboard choices (UK US etc) it then asked me for a password. I tried the password I log in with but it isn't that. Now I am stuck.

There should be an option somewhere (probably in very small print!) to continue without a password!

Outlook - yes a reinstall is an option. (guessing its a 1&1 license).
Windows password? Clean install asks for a key - which you can skip. Are you are trying a startup repair instead? Before a password is asked for it should show which account it is going to use. Is it the account which you usually logon to windows with?
I assume you can still logon to the computer as normal?
    Is this Windoes10?

Dump Outlook and download and install Thunderbird.

    Problem solved.

Had issues receiving emails on my own domain recently, turned out to be a server issue from my hosters side not my settings.

Deleting accounts from devices wont delete emails. Its still there and should be visible on any other device you use.
