I received a letter headed "national mileage register", regarding a car I previously owned, saying that they had got my details from the DVLA and asking me to go to their website hpicheck.com/nmr and enter the mileage of .

The thing is, I MOT'd the car just before I sold it, so the mileage is officially recorded.

Further to that, the garage I sold it to appears to have done another MOT last week, which shows an up-to-date mileage.

The MOT history is available online and anybody can look it up.

So I'm wondering why the heck these people are asking me that?

I'm wondering if it's a scam to harvest your details?

They already have his name and address. They're asking for the mileage of a car he no longer owns.
What details do you imagine they're "harvesting"?

If it was, it would probably qualify as the UK’s longest running scam.

I'd be suspicious too. what are you agreeing to when you fill it in?

All you know is that in your ownership the recorded mileage is correct to the MOTs, and you have nothing further to add.

No-one is ever going to admit a car "lost" 90,000 miles while they owned it surely? So there is no point in asking....
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Quite so, I've had a few over the years. I'm not sure why they still do it now the MOT history is available.
