EDF Energy Prepay Topup 5 times to get lower tariff?

I have had a prepay Powerkey and meter on EDF used for the past several years. I have switched to a lower tariff with the same company and they have confirmed by email this lower tariff started on 06/05/19.

BUT my meter still shows the older higher tariff and thus I am still paying too much. Upon enquiry the company say I need to top up, up to 5 times to have the Powerkey update to the lower tariff from the Paypoint back to my meter. As I said to them if I'd have known this, I would have made 5 small top ups of £1 each rather than 1 or 2 topups per month of £50 or more like i normally do. They say this is in their terms plus they do tell people, if they switch tariffs by phone rather than online.

Yet it always seemed like when there was a tariff increase this went through on the first top up after the increase date.

Any advice or comments anyone?

Just another little way of screwing the customer I think.

Rather like SSE loading most of an estimated bill on the period when the price is higher. (And ignoring customer readings to the contrary.)

From EDF's own website: What prepayment tariffs can I get?
How do I get my new prices once I've changed tariff?
    Existing customers
Once you get confirmation that you've changed tariff, you'll usually get your new tariff prices the first time you top up and insert your key/card in your meter.

Quick fix - just top up £1 every day for the next 4-5 days. If it doesn't update by the 5th top-up, send them a complaint. As long as they update the info on their computer systems, the meter should be updated to the correct tariff the first time you top it up afterwards, the up to 5 times sounds like complete rubbish.
