If you're paying attention to the road, there's no reason to be "caught out".

I guess you're the only person in the world who has never made a mistake or had a moment of inattention. Must be nice to be so perfect.
  • Out of interest, if you choose to take the points on a first offence, if at a later stage you were then caught speeding again, would you be offered the course? My understanding is that you can only take the course once (in any district), but wondered if the above scenario would be valid (meaning you can take the points for a first offence without having to take a day off work, but then not have to take a further 3 points if you get caught again)?

For reference, I don't have any points and don't intend getting any - out of curiosity only.

Yes you can still take a course. The only criteria are the speed (up to Limit + 10% + 9mph) and you must not have done a course for an offence committed within the previous three years (before the date of the latest offence). The scheme is national apart from Dorset so if you do one anywhere else the three year rule applies. Schemes are not offered in Scotland though there are plans to do so.

    Just to add:
a few courses run on a Saturday although it may mean travelling further, if you don't want to take a day off work.

I did a motorway speeding course last week and it wasn't stressful.
No tests, no standing up in front of the group, no forcing you to speak up in front of everyone if you don't want to. The focus is on education, not on telling off.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

How did the speed limit change "quickly" and cause you to be "caught out"?

Were you expecting warning signs? Or the limit to first reduce to 38mph, then a few hundred yards later 36mph all the way down to 30?

The limit didn't change "quickly". it changed and you ignored it thinking you'd get away with speeding. Thankfully, you got caught and hopefully won't do it again.

Speed changes are sometimes done well (e.g. a warning of 30mph to come with rumble strips etc) and sometimes it's just a single sign that could be obstructed or missed if you don't know to look for other indications it's a 30. Of course the flip side is the driver who we've all seen, who does 40 in a 60 limit for miles, gets into a 30 and just keeps doing 40...

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • Personally I'd take the course (though never been in that position myself). From what I've read, most people find them quite helpful (they don't treat you as a naughty boy or girl) and not at all stressful. But do make sure you turn up at the appointed time - if you are late they may not let you do it.

As others have said, you must reply to the NIP naming the driver within the timescale, or it will get stressful, and potentially expensive.

And if you do opt for the COFP, make sure you comply with the conditions, especially sending off your licence (with free proof of posting).

I asked for advise about the fine, if you didn't have anything helpful to add please don't bother to comment on my post.
Yes, it did come up very quickly, and sign is partly hidden by trees. Which I have called the council about.
You must be a one off if you've never made a mistake.
    Sad person

Thank you to everyone else that's helped. I am under the Avon and Somerset police area, so had all the details in one go.
All paid and sorted. Thank you x
