Married Allowance Tax scam by 3rd party companies - fees 50% plus

Sorry this is Marriage Allowance and not mortgage, my mistake.

Unfortunately we have feel foul of this, not sure how this happened or how they got our details but apparently there are thousands of others and this is not being reported in the media, so I'll flag it here.

Fees of over 50% it's a total scam for something you can do for free. For every £1m they are getting in people's rebates they are creaming off over £500k. If you have had the misfortune to fall for this you need to act. It also appears that you have 6 months to raise an issue if you don't hear from them, failure to do so results in 100% forfeiture of what they have claimed.

The HMRC link to apply for free.

I'll post the links as finding them via google took me over 15 minutes, although admittedly I use adblocker so they may just be hidden site but does have their address, this is the only way to contact them.

Marriage Allowance Limited

PO Box 10521

Previously it seems they also had this link which is now a 404 error.

We've been conned however there doesn't appear to be anything so far on the web about this company of others doing this. Please do not use this company, if you have signed any paper work and sent it to them get in touch with HMRC and retract the deed that you have signed and prevent them accessing your information.

Why would you not go directly to HMRC in the first place?

Seeing as they are the the only agency that can do this.

Probably the same reason people end up paying for European Health Cards and additional fees for passport and drivers license renewals - because they don't read what they're agreeing to pay for, even when the "scam" sites state that they aren't the official government sites. You bang in "EHIC" or "renew drivers license" etc into a search engine and choose the first one on the list - the one with " sponsored ad" next to it - because the one you want is going to be at the top of the list, isn't it?

No it's not, but if I want a tax rebate, I go to the tax man.

I want to renew my drivers licence, I go to the DVLA.

I need to check something with my bank, I go to my bank.

You know the people that are actually responsible for these things.

I want scamming, I go to billy down the local pub.

Hardly a scam, more like taking advantage of laziness, if people spent just 5 minutes online they'd find its so simple to apply for all these things themselves

Check out the Cutting Tax thread. There are several cases posted there.
  • Saw a .org advert on Facebook and stupidly applied to the marriage allowance claim company. Heard nothing back from them though I'm owed over £400, any ideas on how to make people more aware of this scam (if I get anything it will be half!)

This is not really the appropriate board for this thread.
It's not about asking for help with benefits.

The OP - over 6 months ago - used an 'agency' instead of the official government organisation for something.

    I agree with LilElvis.
It's no different to using one of the ehic/passport/tax return/driving license & driving test companies that add nothing to the application but charge for the 'service'.

These companies ^^^^ had a usually pretty visible note that the service was free if you used the official website. Some even had links to the official websites.
I'm not sure how much 'value-add' this company gives/gave.

    Not everybody is that savvy.
    Really.
    They aren't.

Re the link in the OP (dated 28/5/2019):
This is the message on the website:
Please note that since September 2019, Marriage Allowance Tax Rebate is no longer accepting new registrations.
Existing claims will not be impacted. If you signed and posted your application form, your claim will have been processed as usual.
There doesn't seem to be any such disclaimer on this ^^^^ website. Maybe they have been closed down.

    To the new poster:
I'm not sure how you can make people more aware of this.
It's up to individuals to make sure they are using the official website.

  • we have fallen for this and owed £800, tried contacting them.to no avail and no phone numbers to. i have just spent an hour getting through to HMRC who are not interested.
As we signed a form they have to send the money to a company they state they have vetted ( but cant explain how they did this) . and just sent a cheque out to them. HMRC couldnt give me the cheque numbers or if it had been cashes. I asked them to cancel the cheque and they said they would look into it and this could take 5-6weeks to cancel.Tried to raise a complaint about the company etc but this would require an investigation they are not willing to do.
Her words were 'you signed the form.so its not our fault its yours'
i asked them to suspend paying this company anymore until.its investigated but they are happy to just send the money out.
it states act wirhin 6 months .. how do i react as HMRC are not interested.

@renshe This is an old thread and is in the Benefits Section of the forum (don't know why as it's about taxation).
You would be better asking your own question on a new thread in the Taxation Section here:
