If I were you I'd get your mucky clothes on, drain off all the oil , put the recommended amount as stated in the hand book (or research on the net), cross your fingers and take it for a good run , preferably with a friend in another car behind in case of problems.
    Good luck!!:D

Just to add when checking oil level make sure the car is reasonably horizontal, and also sometimes oil takes it's time to drain down to the sump after being put into the filler cap - so the full level will not immediately be visible on the stick.

    thanks for all your help..
DH is supposed to be ringing a garage for them to have a look at it. he would drain it but the road outside our house isnt very level and not sure if he can get the car jacked up high enough...
guess if garage look at it they can see if there has been any other damage done. wouldnt mind but his dad agve him the car and said 'you need to put oil in all the time cos it leaks...' so there may already have been a problem but as he never prob did over 40mph in it!!

  • Not sure about that. I've had tow cars (Both Japanese makes) that only held less than 4 liters of oil.

note my use of words average and about
im guessing they were small engines.
i used to work with nissan engines every day, they always held no less than 5 litres for petrol and no less than 8 for diesel.
i now work with volkswagon engines regularly and they can hold anything from 4 1/2 litres.

They weren't really what you'd call small engines, one was 1.6 litre and the other was a 2.0 litre engine. Both of them had relatively short service intervals though.
