Finding a lost will

My mum died on Saturday.
Both her and Dad had wills and were stored with a company.
The telephone number is no long recognisable.
Where do I go from here?

What is the name of the company? Do you have a copy of the wills?

    I'm sorry for your loss.
Do you / your dad have copies of the will? Was the comapny a firm of solicitors?

I beive that the Law Society Gazette (which goes out to all solicitors) has a 'Wills nd whereabouts' section where you can place an ad asking for anyone who holds a will for a specifc person to come forward with it - might be an option if you can't track down the company.

If your dad jas copies ofthe wills then it may also be possible to apply for probate with a copy, backed up with a statemetn from your dad aboutthe circumstnaces of the wills being made, and lost, although it would be sensible for him to make a new, updated will himself to ensure this doesn't happen again.
If he does it through a solicitor this issue is less likely to arise as even if a solicitors firm goes bust, their files will be taken over and the Law Society will normally be able to identify where they went.
