Use prepayment key early

My son is changing his prepayment electricity supplier with a supply start date of 31/05.
He's just called to say he doesn't think his credit will last until 31st.Can he use his new supplier key(already received) before then or should he top up the original key and use the new one after 31st?[/STRIKE]

Bit late but that is what I would of done, not used the 'new' key until the appropriate time, even it meant putting £1 or £2 on the 'old' key to tide it over.
