I was looking at buying from Amazon a WiFi Booster/extender

Do they actually work or do they only extend the WiFi?

Would it work on Fibre and Copper?

I was to what I need is a device to stop my connection relaying download date to the ISA enabling them to slow thing down.

Any ideas on the product I need?

A Wifi extender is used to extend the geographic range of your existing BB service. For example, you might have areas of your house or garden that are beyond the effective range of your existing Router.

If your issues are with your ISP, then a Wifi extender won't make any difference to that.

I was told that all ISP's reduce speeds at various time of the day to give extra bandwidth to high paying subscribers and there is a device to stop data on usage being sent to the ISP letting them slow things down.

    What is this device called?

There can be local congestion issues that makes BB slower at peak times, but actual throttling-back by ISPs is more of a historical thing these days.

Ask your ISP what your guaranteed speed is, and check that you are receiving it.

It never was a physical in-home device, but something applied in the external network infrastructure.

I have problem with my wifi....always at a weekend....some pip squeak at BT explained it like this.
Its like a cake if you cut it into 6 you get a decent piece - cut it into 12 and you get less of a piece, he was told that if that was the case I should have been told that when taking out my contract.

But either more have a slice of the cake at the weekend(normally Sunday) or they cut back somehow because I can set my clock by the wifi dropping out, using ethernet at moment.

Not sure who you are with - but can onto BT forum and get advice to change the bandwidth to one that is less used....which can give you a better signal....or so they say.

Yes - this relates to the congestion I was describing above.

Network congestion is... on the network. It shouldn't make any difference whether you are accessing via Wifi or Ethernet.

Your symptoms sound more like a local wifi interference problem. I would suggest trying a different Wifi band (which is a setting on the Router).

Not bandwidth... but band, as above. There shouldn't be any need to ask the ISP or their forum about this.

Just returned from a friend who was complaining about a slow computer. After allowing it to boot up (yes it was slow) I tried to access bbc.co.uk and it took ages (on wifi). Checked wifi speed with smartfone app - 2Mbps - was expecting nearer to 40. Desktop computer was in a bedroom by chimney which a recent steel lining. Walked to the other side of the bedroom and wifi was 20Mbps.

So resited desktop to other side of bedroom and bbc.co.uk came up quickly (and then AVG kicked in because Dropbox started doing its thing...all because the wifi had been strangled.)
