Advice on Benefits, Housing and Money Saving

  • Thanks Spendless, babysaver and others for your suggestions. Went to a charity shop today and got a few bargains for the kids, means i'm tightening my belt for the rest of the week but it's worth it for the kids. Babysaver, i don't know where my ex is and neither do the IS. He must have jumped on a plane to India by now and probably enjoying himself being waited on hand and foot. He left me when I was five months pregnant. I am actually on the list for a place in manchester, i've been on there now for 2 years and never heard anything from them. I've sent letters and made loads of phonecalls. I would really like to stay here because i feel settled here now and my sister in law is a great help to me here for babysitting etc.
I get milk tokens for both babies. I bottle feed. I know breast is best but I am not comfortable with it. I go down to the clinic once a month to pick up 4 tins at a time.
I have also spoken to shelter and they suggested that I should make a homeless application to my council now. The reason being because I cant afford to live where I am. I'm thinking about it at the moment. Its my last resort.
I really love these boards and everybody is so kind and helpful, although most people seem to be preoccupied with the argos bargains! Do they actually need all the stuff they are buying!?? Anyway good luck to them, they are having loads of fun. Will post again soon.

    Seeta,

If you do go down the line of a "homeless" application and are successful, there's nothing to stop you making sure your name stays on the list for council and housing association for the future. The thing with a homeless application is that you can't really refuse the property they offer you, so it might well not be in the place you want to be. You could also be making applications to individual Housing Associations now too - often it is more desirable to have a HA property than council, it depends on your local area.

  • Hi Fran

I am on the individual HA lists in my area as well as the council list. I just checked. I'm just going to see what the housing benefit does about my rent increase and take it from there.
