My executors each have a sealed envelope which contain two digits of the four digit code to my safe where within there is a third sealed envelope which contains the passwords to my computer, mobile phone and encrypted account/password database. The rest is then up to them.

Sounds like your executors are a bit screwed if the other one is dead, uncontactable or has lost their bit of paper in a house move.

how does the family find out about the account if there is no paper trail?
I make a point of making at least one bank payment into every account I have. Judicious going through the paperwork (there's even a helpful folder left over from the PPI claim) should reveal them.
I am presuming the offspring are financially literate, which may be a stretch, but having the info concealed in plain sight in the old PPI stuff strikes me as reasonably tricky.

If you are paranoid then you can leave the account numbers out and instead list the name of the provider, name of the product, whose name it's in and the year it was opened - that should be sufficient for your executors, although it makes the job slightly trickier.

It should be easier to find and steal your actual passport than your death file.

That's exactly what I've done. I wasn't sure about writing the account numbers down (and some don't even have account numbers as such such as p2p but figured the addresses and organisations were sufficient. They'll be able to trace from the name and address

Crikey, I don't even think Commanders of our Polaris fleet have quite that level of security.

Bearing in mind the majority of adults have not even bothered to get a will put in place I would think few of those people will have thought to have made life easy for whoever has to administer their estate, by leaving easily accessed details about their financial affairs.

Tracking down assets is just the start of it, the poor old administrator then has to look at stuff like debts and gifts made in the last 7 years.

All ours are on password protected (number of) spreadsheets. These are on a pen drive in the safe, and the kids know where the key to the safe is and what is on the pen drive.

I think I would know if one of my executors has died :) or if I lost contact with them :), and if they lose an important envelope then maybe I just picked the wrong calibre of person. Anyhow, I will be past caring as I will be dead.
