Why do extensions cost more in expensive areas?

Presumably building costs are fairly similar wherever you live, so why do extensions cost so much more in London and the South East? Would it make sense to employ a building firm from a cheaper area, even if you had to pay their travel costs?

Supply and demand I expect. Yes, it's not unknown for contractors to travel for work, but obviously it still needs to be worth their while if they're e.g. staying in digs while they do the job.0
