Restriction

I sold a property on Thursday and a restriction was being applied for by someone regarding a debt that was in my name but, one that I was not aware of.
I objected the application on grounds of identity theft and the land registry had not applied the restriction.

Unfortunately the buyers solicitor was not going to agree to the purchase unless I agreed that my solicitor held the amount that was being applied for on the restriction I am now out of pocket by over 10k for something that was not my fault. I was told that it would be released only if the interested party did not contest my objection but, if they do it could take a further six months for it to be released.

I am elderly and need this money. I can not understand why it is being held when no restriction was added and only applied for.

Can the land registry still add a restriction to a property that has sold ?
What would one suggest to get my money back?
