Introduce tracks into large mp3 file on fly

Hi,
i have an 80minute live recording.
I want to create track splits into the 80minute recording so i can skip to sections when listening on my ipod
Key question:
What program (ideally freeware) allows me to create tracks within a large MP3. I have tried Audacity however doesn't let you jump track position as you listen to track on the fly (feurio track editor does let you do this but only writes out to wav...i want to remain within mp3 format).
I need this capability so i can quickly review entire recording and select track position by simpling positioning cursor
Can i do this without creating multiple files (eg 8 tracks does not create 8 individual files)...this is more of a nice to have.
Thanks!
Filiss

Have a read of the Audacity help wiki here: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Splitting_recordings_into_separate_tracks
I assume you want the software to find the tracks automatically. Skip teh first few items until you get to "Automatic labelling based on silences"0 -
hi,
I don't want software to find tracks automatically. I want to be able to easily jump to different parts of the 80min recording so i can manually assign track position.
The recording is 80mins continuous so there are no gaps at all.
Hope this helps

I think there may be a bit of confusion over terminology. Your 80 minute recording is stored in one file and constitutes one track. Specifying time points within that track where you want to jump to doesn’t create extra tracks.
The Feurio suite of software appears to be designed specifically for producing CDs. The Red Book, the first standard describing audio CDs, does allow for the subdivision of tracks. These are called index points. They were hardly ever used, and when they were, it wasn’t usually in any sensible way. They were quickly forgotten. The Feurio Track Editor may well be able to produce index points when creating data to put onto CDs. The information on a CD is not stored as a .wav file. The .wav format is very simple and there is no provision to include index points.
To the best of my knowledge the MP3 file format also lacks the ability to include index points. It maybe possible to convey these to any iPod using an extra file. An example of such a format is the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language. I’ve no idea if the iPod supports anything similar. I think the easiest solution is just to break your single file into eight.古池や蛙飛込む水の音0 -
Thanks Alfie...useful input.
Does anyone know if iTunes allows you to create/read index point/split?
If not, what is the best software to easily split tracks.
Ideal sceanrio is jump to different parts of the 80 min recording easily, and simply click point whilst listening to track where you want split to take place.
Some software i have tried makes you place pointer and then have to press play to listen to pointer position. Feurio again simply jumps to pointer position as you listen which saves lots of time.

I can't believe that you haven't split the 80 minute live recording into individual tracks by now!
