Reverting to XP when vista is pre installed

And why bother? Laptops seem to be the one group of PC's that have the least issues with Vista because of the nature of the hardware in them.Little_John wrote: »Microsoft accept that people have software that won't work on vista but could in the future.
In the travel industry none of the central reservation systems will work with windows vista. they are working on updates but as of last week they still wouldnt work. I'm not talking the holiday booking system that can just use a web browser now I'm talking the flight/hotel systems.
and planemad it depends where you buy your laptop, go to PC world or anyother place who's main customer is home users then yes you most likely to get home basic or home premium but buy from most other places you can choose the OS that is installed.0 -

Don't believe that. Just had to wipe clean and re-install after Vista corrupted my user and would not let me dial in, read/copy my own files. Its CARP!

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
Why, because it doesn't allow someone without the correct UID to access a folder with file permissions set for a completely different UID and you're too stupid to work out that all you have to do is select the folder and take ownership of it?
And I'll tell you something else. Had you set up your user account on XP properly as a user instead of Administrator, not that basic computer security is even a consideration in your eyes, you'd have got exactly the same result.
So in fact what you're saying is that Vista has issues because it does file access permissions properly the same as Windows NT 3.51,NT4, 2000 and XP has for the last decade but because it sets a user up as a user and not an administrator by default (something which is VERY BAD SECURITY PRACTICE) so the file permission thing actually shows then it's broken?
(By UID I mean the specific unique user ID code associated with a profile, not the user name - read up on NTFS security if you want to know why you can't recreate an account with the same user name and access those files)
I guess that's the difference between me, someone who knows about computers, and you - a keyboard masher.
Any more complaints about Vista which is working exactly as it should do?0 -
I have vista premium and I have to say at first it was abit of a headache but once you know where you have to go for drivers of software that are for xp your up and running in no time...I love it and wouldn't go back to xp for anything...also M$ are letting retailer's sell xp until june 2008 so you could just ask the vender to give you xp instead of vista but on the whole I think vista is alot easier than xp...:D
Pls be nice to all MSer's
There's no such thing as a stupid question, and even if you disagree courtesy helps.

I had Vista business on my Dell laptop. I now reverted back to XP as I find it runs so much smoother than Vista did and much less resource hungry. I didnt like it on our other pcs too.
I have used MS OS some beta ever since windows 3.1 days but Vista no thank you.
I do have a AMD dual core 2 laptop with 2gb ram as well.0 -
Conor, no need to blow up when someone says something against vista, the user ID corruption does seem to be something that happens a little more often than it should I have had the same problem now 3 times with customers PC's yes it occasionally happened with XP but it was due to a failing hard drive that time, I ended up having to take the drive out on the vista systems I also checked the drives for errors and there were none, and take ownership of the user profile to recover the files, drive back in and create another user profile and put the files or import back in to the new user profile. 3 occasions in a few months just shouldn't happen.
Vista is power hungry as poppycat says never mind useing the advanced display features just a basic install wants more memory and drive space to run the OS. not good im afraid.0 -
It's possible to set up a dual-boot system with both on it. Vista has more useful partitioning tools than XP, so perhaps this isn't too difficult to arrange.
A potential drawback though, from the little I've read so far (browsing a book in the shop without buying it yet!), is that booting into XP takes away the System Restore points in Vista.
I have a new laptop with Vista business, not used a lot so far, and a licenced copy of XP Pro, so I might get around to this or decide to revert.0
