Help - Laptop refuses to recognise new Hard Disk

My daughters Acer laptop HD failed (Hitachi 30Gb 4200rpm) 3 years old.

Bought a new one (Hitachi 80Gb 7200rpm), looks identical on the outside i.e size, screws, pins etc.

Fitted it in the laptop used the system disk to boot, went into set-up (F2) changed the boot order as per the recovery/rebuild instructions. Set up displays the new HD model and serial number (so it is reading it ?).

The system disk asks for the language I want the instructions in and then gives me the complete rebuild option which I choose (warns me about loosing all data). It then instructs me to remove the system disk and put in the recovery disk which I do, it reads the disk for about 15 seconds but then gives the following error message:

Usage Error 11030
Invalid destination drive

I have tried it about a dozen times and I always get the same error.
Any suggestions ?

Is the new HD not suitable ?
Is the recovery disk trying to write to itself rather than the HD ?

Thanks for your help.

It may well be that as it is a new drive and unformatted, the recovery software can not recognise it. In this situation, the CD drive will be the C drive as it is th only one on the system.

You possibly need to get at least a partition on to the new drive.

Also doesn't Acer's recovery software need to access the hidden partition that exists on the original HD?

you would find it much easier to make a disk image from the old hdd to the new hdd first, using summat like ghost etc...
    Get some gorm.

There is a multitude of ways to get your new hard drive partitioned and formatted.

You don't sound as if you would be happy with a boot floppy and a few dos commands (or even if the Laptop has a floppy)

You could download a boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) and boot with that CD in the drive.

There are loads of Hard Drive partitioning/formatting tools included (along with a load of other handy tools)

Once it is partitioned & formatted, your Recovery CD should work okay (unless, as !!!!!! mentioned, it will only work if the recovery disk doesn't rely on a hidden partition. If it does, you will need a full Windows disk)

    Thanks for the advice.

Old HD is dead, everything lost, so no option to get an image.

The new drive is brand new, so perhaps it needs formatting and a partition creating.

I will look to obtain/create an ultimate boot CD and then format/partition the new drive. I will then look to run the recovery procedure again.
