I partly heard a radio and this morning.

It said having a smart meter alone will not save you money .

However creating a smart network will in the long run.
Something like that.

Its use though isn't it, not the meter you have. A smart IHD might make you more aware of the consumption but the meter type alone (assuming it records correctly!) will not make any difference. :)

Not really sure about the smart network, is this along the lines of "internet of things" ? I'm not really sure on that either, I don't see a need to have a toaster connected for instance! As you've got to get up to get the bread out anyway! :D

I think its more a case of finding the right tarrif for the situation and then thinking about possible savings vs cost of newer appliances as in more efficient ones, and usual things like not leaving needless appliances/lights/etc etc on.

A bit like saying that a newer boiler might save me £100 a year but the fact that you'd have to pay (random) £900 for it in the first place, the "saving" does not really appear that great. If its time to change it then yes but otherwise it seems similar to buying a car with cheaper road tax vs the cost of keeping what you have. You can flip this 'new appliance' thing on its head too if you take into the environmental 'cost' of actually operating the factory / resources use etc to build the new boiler in the first place. :D

    :)

I assumed informing the power companies of demand information would result in reduced costs in decades time.

I assume that demand information will enable the power companies to charge more at peak time.

They obviously already know the overall demand on the grid, but this will enable them to know the 'culprits';)
