£300 Laptop with Good Battery

Hi! First post

I am a student looking for a relitevely basic laptop priced £300 - £400. It must have a good battery. I would like it to be wi-fi ready and preferably have a built in webcam. The minimun spec I would look for is 1GB RAM, 60GB+ HDD, DVD RW and not have a Celeron/Semperon processor. The Dell Vostro 1000 opt. 2 with 9-Cell upgrade looks good, but I have heard bad things aboout the batteries breaking after a year, is it true?

Many thanks to whoever replies. :)

  • You might want to wade through the Great Decent cheapest laptop thread
  • ^Thanks for the link to the other thread, but as I said I need a laptop with a very good battery life, not just a great spec.
  • The two can run hand in hand, but your budget will limit you substantially

Acer do certain models of laptops with a higher Amp hour battery, they cost a bit more but some are with in your budget.

BUT I would suggest that you get a standard Acer laptop and purchase another compatible generic battery from ebay for around £30 and just swap them over you should get 2 hours out of each battery this way

Avoid laptops with dual core processors if you want good battery life as you say a celeron or sempron 3500+ will be idea for you.
  • but unfortunately the OP doesn't want that as pointed out
    not have a Celeron/Semperon processor.
    , which REALLY limits things

Methinks you may have to compromise somewhere

I don't know what the battery life is like probably average
  • you're approaching this all the wrong way. What do you need the computer to do? A celeron processor might be all you need - don't be turned off because of the name "celeron"

you've asked for a basic laptop and then string off a list of essentials. I'm sorry but for your budget you are going to have to compromise somewhere.

If you need battery life get anything that looks suitable and then spend another £50 on another battery and carry round 2.

but you really need to think about what the machine will need to do and work backwards from that.
