Getting mains gas installed in house
Options
We viewed a house today that we are very interested in purchasing. It was built in the 1980's by an architect and for some reason he installed heating for the downstairs in the ceilings and underfloor upstairs but all powered by electric. It does have solar panels but I wonder if anyone has an idea how much mains gas would cost to have put in should we decide it to be necessary?
The 1960's bungalows in the rest of the cul-de-sac all have it.

The cost of installing gas depends on how far they've got to run the pipes and how complex it will be.A short run without much in the way of civil works should cost less than a long run from the main on the other side of the road which might entail traffic control and re-instatement of road and pathways.
It really is a how long is a piece of string question. You'd need to get a quotation/estimate from the local gas supplier/distribution company.
I guess you might be able to mitigate some of the cost by digging your own trench on your land from the road/pathway but the gas company/contractor would have to do the civils in the public roadway/footpath and verges, lay the pipework and connect it all up.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Probably a few thousand pounds.
Don't get a quote until you are ready to go ahead, as if you get a second quote later it will go up.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
No1) Contact the network operator for your area, ( "Cadent" are one of the biggest ), if not use a web search.
Who ever it is, they will give you a free quote for piping the gas to the property, and tell you where the meter should be fitted
Important It is the supply installer who will issue you with the vital
NPRN number - Keep this safe
No2 ) Armed with that info, get at least 3 quotes from Local plumbers for fitting Boiler and Rads - Local is important as with the " I know where you live card", you won't need an expensive annual service/repair contract such as those sold by Brit Gas
3) The supply pipe will capped, the meter will fitted by your chosen Gas Supplier - Usually best if you use your present Elec supplier, but if it's one of the newer, cheaper firms they may not be up to speed with this work - When mine was done I Switched to EDF who did a good job, then Switched to ZOG when it was all up and running.0
